Conducted Researches
In a 2010 study, the effect of lavender capsules was compared with Lorazepam in patients with GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). In this study, the effectiveness of a 6-week lavender capsules intake compared to lorazepam in adults with GAD was investigated. The results indicated that lavender capsules are as effective as Lorazepam in adults with GAD. Since the active ingredients of lavender have no potential for drug abuse, it is known as an effective and useful alternative to benzodiazepines for improving general anxiety.2
In another study, the effect of lavender essential oil on test-taking anxiety among graduate nursing students was investigated. The findings of this study showed that lavender essential oil can reduce exam anxiety in nursing students.3
In another research, the effect of Linalool on anxiety in mice was studied. The results of this research showed that linalool, in addition to its anti-anxiety properties, increases social interaction and decreases aggressive behavior in mice.4
In a randomized controlled trial, 60 patients in coronary ICU who had problems with insomnia and anxiety were selected to investigate the effect of lavender essential oil on sleep quality and anxiety level, 30 of them were the controlled group, while the other 30 were used lavender essential oil before sleep for 15 days. The results showed that Lavender essential oil increased sleep quality and reduced level of anxiety in patients with coronary artery disease.5
In another study in 2019, the effect of lavender on the sleep quality of 68 patients has been examined. In this evaluation, it was observed that the consumption of lavender had no effect on the patients’ vital signs, but it guaranteed a deeper sleep on the second day after the intervention. Moreover, it facilitated falling back asleep after waking and increased the quality of sleep.6
In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 35 women 48-65 years old with a clinical diagnosis of insomnia were studied. The participants that inhaled different oils before bed for 29 days were divided into two groups: Placebo Group; sunflower oil, and Aroma Group; Lavandula angustifolia essential oil. Both groups received sleep hygiene guidelines before the intervention and were followed up weekly during it. Based on the results obtained from comparing the periods before and after the intervention, Aroma Group participants had a significant decrease in delayed sleep onset, depression level, hot flashes, menopausal symptoms and a significant increase in sleep quality. Polysomnography data (multiple sleep test) showed an increase in sleep efficiency and a decrease in wakefulness after sleep onset in Aroma Group participants.7
